ENERGY TIP

Don’t choose a lower air conditioning temperature when you first turn it on. It won’t cool faster –- whenever it’s running it’s cooling as fast as it can. Set low, it cools longer, not faster.

Sustainable Energy Principles

Waverly Light and Power is committed to progressive action that improves air quality and demonstrates concern for the environment.  Therefore, the Waverly Light and Power (WLP) Board of Trustees adopted the following Sustainable Energy Principles:

1. Renewable Energy
Waverly Light and Power supports the use of renewable energy to reduce the demand of fossil fuels for energy production and produce cleaner energy. The use of renewable energy conserves the world’s limited resources and reduces the release of atmospheric pollution associated with fossil fuel combustion.

  • Hydro: WLP operates three hydro-electric turbines that produce approximately 1.5 million kWhs annually.  It is our intent to maintain these turbines and utilize the output to serve our customers.
  • Wind: WLP operates two wind turbines with a third to be installed in coming years.  Two turbines generate approximately 3.6 million kWhs.  The third will bring local wind generation to approximately 5.5 million kWhs.
  • Solar: WLP operates a photovoltaic system consisting of three panels.  This array generates approximately 12,600 kWhs per year.
  • Renewable Energy Purchases:  WLP will purchase energy generated from wind, biomass, landfill gas and other renewable sources when it is available and cost justified.

2. Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Waverly Light and Power believes that energy efficiency and conservation are fundamental elements in WLP’s sustainable energy strategy.  The demand for energy continues to grow and must be tempered by energy efficiency and conservation to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources. WLP will provide strong drivers to actively promote energy efficiency and conservation.  Wise energy use:

  • reduces costs (energy is an essential input to production, distribution and marketing of products and services)
  • reduces emissions and other environmental impacts,
  • extends the availability of large but non-renewable resources, and
  • makes energy more affordable to consumers, not only by reducing use, but also by reducing the overall need for investments in energy supply.

3. Distributed Generation
Waverly Light and Power supports the development and ownership of small scale alternative energy projects by our customers.  These projects reduce customer dependence on fossil fuel generated electricity and reduce the amount of power WLP must purchase and bring to our service territory.

4.Emission Improvements
Waverly Light and Power will pursue appropriate capital improvements that reduce pollutants from local engines and the fossil fuel plants from which we purchase power.
