Call 811
Summer brings many yard projects. Before installing a fence, building a deck, planting a tree, or starting any digging project, there is one important step homeowners must take. Waverly Light and Power wants to remind residents to call 811 at least two days before they dig to ensure safety and prevent power outages in homes and neighborhoods. The call alerts Waverly Light and Power of the projects, then employees come to the property and mark the utility lines. After the lines are marked, safe digging is easy. The call and the service are free.
People often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked because of concerns about project delays and costs. These assumptions can be dangerous. Every digging job requires a call – even small projects like planting trees or shrubs. Whether digging yourself or hiring a professional, utility lines need to be marked. If an underground utility line is hit while digging, it can harm the digger and those around them, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, and potentially cause fines and repair costs. The new, federally-mandated national “Call Before You Dig” number, 811, was developed to protect residents from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines while working on digging projects.
“Each year Waverly Light and Power experiences individual electric system disturbances that could have been avoided if 811 had been called. We are hopeful to call attention to community members to call before they dig in the future,” said Operations Manager, Mike Litterer.
